Lesson 10

The Daily Card

One card a morning, and why it teaches faster than studying does.

If you take one thing from this course, take this. A single card every morning, read against the day in front of you, will teach you more in two months than any amount of reading about meanings.

How it works

Shuffle, draw one, look at it. Ask what it might be pointing at today — not as a prediction, as something to watch for. Write the card down with one line of what you think it means for you. That is the morning half, and it takes three minutes.

In the evening, come back and add what happened.

Why it beats studying

A meaning read in a book is abstract. The same card attached to a specific afternoon — the conversation that went badly, the offer you nearly missed — becomes a memory instead. After a month you stop recalling definitions and start recognising situations, and recognising situations is what reading is.

The daily card also exposes your own habits faster than anything else will. You will catch yourself reading the Five of Pentacles as money every single time and never as isolation. You will notice you flinch at the Tower before you have looked at it.

The card that keeps coming back

Sooner or later the same card turns up four days running. This is not a message losing patience. It usually means your reading of it is too narrow.

Read that card again, look specifically at the part you keep skipping, and check whether the wider meaning fits the week better than the one you keep reaching for.
